Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

JOB DESCRIPTION
Assists Golf Course Superintendent in maintenance, operation, and project planning of Forest Hills Golf Course, which includes irrigation and bunker maintenance, arboriculture skills (tree climbing, felling, tree diagnostics, pruning, and safety), drainage installation, horticultural and bed care, and other projects that arise on the course. Helps coordinate parks aquatic pesticide usage.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Associate degree in turf grass management or closely related field, or 10 years experience in golf course grounds, maintenance and two years supervisory experience in golf course management. Certificate in arborist training. Skill in the operation of construction and grounds maintenance equipment.

Seasonal Employment

Every Spring, the Lorain County Metro Parks increases its program offerings, gardens need tended, grass starts to grow, the golf course re-opens and visitation to the park increases. To handle all of this increased activity, seasonal employees are needed. Seasonal applicants must have a valid State of Ohio Driver's license and be 18 years of age or older. Seasonal Naturalist Positions Available
Summer 2008

Who: Any person looking to gain experience in the field of interpretation, education, biology, or history

What: Seasonal Naturalists work from the French Creek Nature Center and help coordinate and conduct nature camps, outdoor adventure camps, science camps, and history camps. Organizational skills and experience working with children is important. Knowledge of the local natural history is also a plus. Seasonal naturalists may work some weekends and may help with other nature center tasks, such as animal care and assisting visitors.

Seasonal Naturalist Position at Carlisle Visitor Center
Summer 2008

Under the supervision of: Naturalist Supervisor
Category: 39 hours/week (mid-June through mid-August)

General Description
The Lorain County Metro Parks is looking for creative, motivated and committed individuals to join the Naturalist Department at the Carlisle Visitor Center in providing quality interpretive nature programming and animal care. Seasonal Naturalists conduct a variety of educational, recreational, and cultural history programs for varied private and public groups of all ages within Lorain County, including scouts, preschoolers, civic and service organizations, families, young adults, adults, and senior citizens. Interpretive information provided by the Seasonal Naturalist is presented via informal lectures, hikes, crafts, and activities supplemented with the use of audio-visual presentation media, live animals, taxidermy and other manipulatives. This opportunity is ideal for individuals seeking to develop their skills in environmental interpretation and live animal care. Candidates for the Seasonal Naturalist position will be offered 39 hours a week, generally Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm with some evening and weekend hours as needed.

Qualifications
Creative, active, and motivated individuals preferred. Must have good communication skills, be able to demonstrate effective public speaking, and provide quality public service according to Lorain County Metropolitan Park District policy. Ability to work on multiple tasks (sometimes independently) and adapt to change is important. Experience in the care and handling of captive reptiles, amphibians, and birds of prey is a plus.

Rate of pay
$7 per hour, 39 hours per week

Horticultural Internships for Spring-Summer 2008

The Schoepfle Garden is seeking park service trainees to assist in grounds maintenance, installation of new plantings and to conduct public programs. Applicants must be detail oriented and have the ability to accurately follow through on work assignments without close supervision. Applicants must have valid driver’s license and be a minimum of 17 years of age and capable of performing outdoor physical work. Applicants will also be enrolled in an educational program pursuing a degree in horticulture or related field. Park Aide

The Park Aides perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintaining and improving Park District resources, including but not limited to: Clean park facilities; routine landscaping tasks (mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, etc.); litter and trash pick-up; operate vehicles and equipment.  Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.

Golf Aide

The Golf Aides maintains golf course equipment and golf course.  Performs mainly routine tasks in maintenance and landscaping including but not limited to: cleans park facilities, performs routine landscaping tasks, assist in daily course set-up.  Previous knowledge of golf course equipment and duties preferred.  Must be able to life up to 80 pounds and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.

Natural Resource Technician (Park Service Trainee)

The Natural Resource Technician assists in the implementation of Natural Resource Management Plans for the parks.  Assists with wetland maintenance, nest box upkeep, invasive plan control, brush clearing, and field mowing.  Assists with prescribed burn crew.  Works individually or with park staff and volunteers in all weather conditions.  Performs related maintenance tasks as apparent or assigned.  This position may be used to fulfill internship requirements.  Qualifications:  Must have a strong interest in resource management, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, or related field.  Individuals either possessing or working towards degree in one of these fields given preference.  Must have working knowledge of local flora and fauna.  Must have working knowledge of power tools, agricultural equipment or construction equipment.  Must be willing to apply herbicides within park natural areas.   Rate of Pay for this position: $6.85 - $7.85 per hour.
