A very large bird with long, broad wings, a large tail, and a relatively large head and beak. Young birds are dark brown throughout with some white blotches. Adult birds have dark brown bodies with the distinctive white head and tail feathers. Behavior: Soars often and effortlessly. May spend considerable time perched on prominent branch. Can dive and snatch fish directly from water, but most often steals meals from other predators or scavengers. Habitat: Woodlands and woodlots near large rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Range: Throughout North America south of the tundra except portions of the Great Plains, mountains, and desert southwest. Abundance: No longer endangered! Uncommon in many areas, but increasing. Nesting: Builds nest out of sticks and branches - can add to nest over several years to produce impressively large structure. Lay 1 to 3 eggs which both parents incubate. Food: Largely fish but some birds, rabbits
and rodents. Carrion may be a large part of the Bald Eagle's diet. |
