American Red Cross Learn To Swim Standards

Effective Winter, 2008

Toddler (Pelican) – This class is designed for children ages 18-36 months and a parent. This class promotes water safety and fun with parent involvement. Disposable swim pants are required on those swimmers who are not toilet trained.

Preschool A (Starfish) - This class is designed for children 6 years and under. Skills to be taught include bubble blowing, supported front and back floats, paddling on front and back supported, lifejacket use, supported front and back glides and pool rules and water safety.

Preschool B (Sea Turtles) - This class is designed for children 6 years and under. Skills to be taught include bobs, unsupported front and back floats, unsupported front and back glides, combined arm and leg action on front and back, treading water, picking up submerged object and sitting and kneeling dive.

Preschool C (JellyFish) - This class is designed for children 6 years and under. Skills to be taught include recovery from front and back float and glides, treading water in chest deep water, unsupported arm and leg action on front and back, rotary breathing and leg action on side with support and general water safety.

Level 1- Introduction to Water Skills (Goldfish) - Skills to be taught in this level include using ladder, steps, or side to enter or exit water, completely submerging the face and opening the eyes under water, bubble blowing through mouth and nose, supported front and back float and recovery from the floating positions, treading water with support, alternating arm leg action on front and back with support, basics of general and personal water safety.

Level 1 ½ - Introduction to Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Penguin) - Skills to be introduced in this level include jumping from the side, completely submerging face and opening eyes under water, unsupported front and back floats and glides and recovery from those positions, bubble blowing through mouth and nose, and alternating arm and leg action on front and back with support, general and personal water safety.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Seal) - Class participants should have completed Level 1 Goldfish and Penguin. Skills to be taught in this level include submerging head by performing bobs, treading water unsupported using arm and leg motion in chest deep water, unsupported combined arm and leg action on front and back, fining and sculling arm action, alternating and simultaneous leg action on side with support, general and personal water safety.

Level 3- Stroke Development (Otter) - Class participants should have completed Level 1 and Level 2 skills. Skills to be taught in this level include jumping from side of pool into deep water, basis of diving from sitting or kneeling position, rotary breathing with body in horizontal position, survival floats, changing direction from vertical and horizontal position on front and back, treading water in deep water for 20 seconds, front and back crawl, butterfly kick and body motion, general and personal water safety.

Level 4-Stroke Improvement (Walrus) - Class participants should have completed all skills listed in prior levels. Skills to be taught in this level include diving from the side of pool from standing position, underwater swimming, feet first surface dives, survival, front and back floats for at lease one minute, turning at the wall from front and back position, treading water in deep water for at lease one minute, front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke for increased distances, general and personal safety.

Level 5- Stroke Refinement (Hippo) - Class participants should have completed all skills listed in prior levels. Skills to be taught in this level include shallow dive from the side of pool, deep water surface dives, survival, front and back floats for at least two minutes, flip turns, treading water in deep water for at least two minutes, front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and side stroke for 25 to 50 yards, general and personal water safety including survival swimming and rescue breathing.

Level 6- Polar Bear- This level is for proficient swimmers who are interested in advanced personal water safety, fundamentals of diving, lifeguard readiness, and fitness swimming. Interested candidates for this level should contact Splash Zone for completed description.
